French Toast Bites

Christmas Meals

French Toast Bites

For the past 4 years we have hosted Christmas dinner at our house. My family comes early Christmas morning and the house is instantly filled with laughter as we sip our coffee and open gifts . Normally, for breakfast, we just indulge in left over cookies and pie from the previous nights Christmas eve party. This is remarkably satisfying but I have always wanted to make Christmas breakfast for everyone to enjoy. Something they would look forward to Christmas morning. I want the house to smell like Christmas when they walk in.

Keep it Simple

Whatever I choose to make has to be something quick and easy considering I also have to prepare my turkey for Christmas Dinner. Thankfully, I found this recipe for cinnamon toast balls and have slightly adapted it into what I like to call French toast Bites. French toast bites are baked and it frees up my stove top so there is no need to hover over the stove watching them. Let’s face it, Christmas is for spending time with family not in front of a hot stove.

To make your own French toast bites follow these simple step by step instructions. (Recipe Below instructions)

First butter one side of the sandwich bread:

2 Ingredient Creme Drop Fudge

If making good fudge is a dream come true that seems out of reach then this 2 Ingredient Creme Drop Fudge recipe is for you! All that’s required is 2 ingredients and one minute of your time. I found this in a large stack of handwritten recipes I inherited from my Nana. And what perfect timing with Christmas only two weeks away! I can pick up a bag of creme drops for around two bucks and I almost always have a jar of peanut butter in the pantry. That’s all you need to make this delicious 2 ingredient creme drop fudge. If you want to dress it up a little you can add a handful of your favorite crushed nuts but it’s really up to you. Just throw the peanut butter and creme drops together in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for about 1 minute. And it’s really that easy! I have already made about 4 batches of this Creme Drop Fudge and I know I will be making many more.

This recipe is definitely a keeper and I am so glad I found it. It’s nice having recipes like this on hand for when company comes unexpected. Especially with Christmas fast approaching us. People are always stopping in unexpected this time of year and I can’t think of a better way to embrace this then with a yummy batch of this creme drop fudge and warm cup of coffee. This Creme Drop Fudge is so good your guests will never believe you when you tell them how easy it is to make. Maybe that can just be our little secret, I won’t tell if you won’t 😉

peppermint-fluff-dessert

Above, I told you how I’m hoping my Peppermint Fluff Layered Dessert will make up for my absents and I think it will. This dessert is so easy your kids could do it, seriously, its THAT easy. I think some call this sort of dessert a lasagna but when I think lasagna I think loads of cheese and red sauce. Not layers of chocolate pudding and fluffy peppermint cream, which is exactly what this Peppermint Fluff Layered Dessert is. This dessert is layers of chocolate graham crackers, chocolate pudding, and peppermint fluff, it is just as beautiful as it is delicious. I already have requests to make this for our Christmas Eve party. 😉

* I suggest making this dessert in a clear glass 13 X 9 cake pan so all the beautiful layers are visible. In the photo mine is in a metal cake pan because I left my glass cake pan at my moms house.

Pumpkin Pie Frappe

Pumpkin Frape

Pumpkin Pie Frappe

Pumpkin season starts next month and I am Kicking it off with my Pumpkin Pie Frappe. My sister and I are pumpkin fanatics. We patiently wait all summer long for pumpkin season to come rolling in and when it does we are usually the first ones in line for some sort of pumpkin treat. Usually we start our long awaited pumpkin season out with a pumpkin coffee and a pumpkin muffin from Dunkin Donuts. I’m actually drooling now as I am typing this. I think they will start serving all their pumpkin treats the first week of September. I can’t wait!

Sugar spice and everything nice is the name of the game with this recipe. Pumpkin and vanilla ice cream add sweetness and a pinch of cloves for the spice. It tastes just like my moms homemade pumpkin pie. It is basically fall in a cup and the perfect treat for September when you have fall fever but it is still hot outside. I made these Pumpkin Pie Frappes a few weeks ago for my family and received rave reviews. My sister and I slurped this fall treat down like there was no tomorrow. I actually drank one before I went to their house.. and the day before. Hey! Quality control, right? =P  I am blessed to have such an amazing family that is always willing to test all my crazy recipe inventions, both the good and the bad. They give me lots of constructive criticism which I have always been grateful for. They are my biggest fans and I can always count on them for support.

If you try my Pumpkin Pie Frappes or any other recipes you see on BurlapKitchen.com I would love to hear back from you! Banana Whoopie Pie Cake

Banana Whoopie Pie Cake

Banana Whoopie Pie Cake

While grocery shopping this past week I discovered that bananas were on sale for .19 cents a pound. I knew this would be a great time to stock up for recipe testing, so I did. Do you remember that delicious chocolate whoopie pie cake I posted a while back? Well, I thought, how good would a banana whoopie pie cake be? So I rearranged a few ingredients, and to my surprise, the recipe turned out perfectly on the very first try. That doesn’t happen often, but when it does I celebrate!

This banana whoopie pie cake is everything that it should be. The cake is moist and banana-ie (I know that’s not a word but it should be!). And the filling is sweet with a hint of vanilla. These cakes are so easy to make. The hardest part about making them is flipping the one cake on top of the other. It goes much more smoothly if you say a little cake flipping prayer. At least that’s how I do it! =)

If you make my Banana Whoopie Pie cake I would love to hear how it turned out for you! =)

Aunt Marry’s Apple Dumplings

Aunt Mary's Apple Dumplings

Aunt Mary’s Apple Dumplings

Everyone says Aunt Mary’s Apple Dumplings are the best. I would have to agree but I have a confession to make, I don’t really like apples. Or any fruit for that matter. No, I am the girl who peels off the delicious warm outer layer of the apple dumpling and devours it with a nice big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Some lucky soul next to me will get the “guts” or as you would probably call it, the apple, of my dumpling. If this were a perfect world I’d sit next to someone who didn’t like the warm flaky crust that has been drenched with a sticky butter and brown sugar sauce. They could have my apple and I could have  another serving of that warm flaky crust with sticky sauce. But this world is far from perfect and until then I will just have to deal…

In order for your apple dumpling making experience to be more enjoyable there are two things you are going to need.

  1. You are going to want a good apple corer. I didn’t have one and tried coring the apples with a knife and it was a mess, I don’t recommend doing it this way. Not to mention this was very dangerous, I cut myself twice while doing it this way. so learn from my mistake and buy an apple corer. I would actually recommend buying an all in one apple corer & peelers but I will leave a link to both.

2. You are going to need some good baking apples. If you use a different type of apple they will not bake properly. Personally, I like using granny smith apples. They seem to bake very nice and everyone loves them.

Chocolate Whoopie Pie Cake

Whoopie Pie cake

Chocolate Whoopie Pie Cake

(This is a recipe my mother found in an old church cookbook when I was a child and she has been using it ever since)

If you are a fan of whoopie pies, like me, but not a fan of making them, then you are going to love this recipe. This Chocolate Whoopie Pie Cake is so easy to make and only bakes for about 15 minutes. The hardest part about making one of these cakes is flipping the one cake on top of the other. You have to wait until both cakes are cooled then spread the icing on one cake and flip the other cake evenly on top. It can be a little tricky! I usually say a prayer before doing this. It’s my whoopie pie cake prayer 😉

As a child, I remember my mom making this Chocolate Whoopie Pie Cake often, it was a family favorite. She told me that she wrote the recipe down from an old church cookbook years ago, so we are uncertain who this recipe belongs to. I remember her taking this chocolate whoopie pie cake to picnics and family gatherings and she almost always came home with an empty pan.

(Cake Box Recipe) S’mores Bundt Cake

S'mores cake

(Cake Box Recipe)  S’mores Bundt Cake

Cake box recipes are so fun! I love them and I make a lot of them. My (Cake Box Recipe) S’mores Bundt cake is super easy to make. It tastes just as fantastic as it looks! It is a moist and fluffy cake topped to resemble an S’more.  And you will love the simplicity of this recipe. I think the hardest part was making the ganache, and if you have ever made ganache, you know that’s a cinch. Basically, it is just equal parts of cream and chocolate, easy peasy. Your guests will seriously think you spent all day in the kitchen. And I wouldn’t tell them any differently, what they don’t know won’t hurt them right? 😉

My favorite part about this cake is using the kitchen torch. If you do not own one of these you need to! I bought mine at a kitchen store for about $12 and it was the best $12 I ever spent =P . There are so many cool recipes you can make when you own one of these. I have yet to make a creme brulee but it is next on the list. Not to mention I can have a toasted marshmallow anytime I want! haha

Tip – When putting on the marshmallow fluff, take spoonfuls and plop them all around the top of the cake, then use the back of the spoon to smooth it together. Let the cake sit for about 10 minutes and you will see the marshmallow fluff begin to run down the sides of the cake. It’s so easy to do and makes the cake look so elegant.

Mom’s Fruit Salad Recipe

Mom’s Fruit Salad Recipe

My Mom’s Fruit Salad Recipe is the perfect recipe for all your summer gatherings. My mom makes this a lot in the summer and I can see why! It only takes about 5 minutes to whip up and is also budget friendly. Plus the only dishes you will dirty is the bowl you use, a knife, and a spoon, so the clean up is a breeze. Who wants to be standing in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove and a sink full of dishes in the summer anyways? Not me, that’s for sure!

Ingredients:

2 –  ( 29 oz) Cans Fruit Cocktail

2 – ( 15 oz) cans mandarin oranges

1 –  jar Maraschino Cherries

1 –  ( 15.5 oz) container strawberries with syrup ( or sugar), Thawed

2 –  Ripe Bananas

Directions:

Pour all ingredients ( entire cans, juice and all) , except bananas, in a large serving bowl and gently mix. When ready to serve, slice bananas and add them to the fruit salad. Store in the Refridgerator.

*If you can not find Strawberries with syrup or sugar – Buy a bag of frozen strawberries and sprinkle them with sugar and let them thaw in the fridge overnight. They should make their own syrup that way.

Mini Brownie S’mores Bites

S'more

Mini Brownie S’mores Bites

It’s almost 80 degrees here in central Pennsylvania, this means it is perfectly acceptable to talk  S’mores or, in this case, Mini Brownie S’mores Bites. And with S’mores, comes two types of people, those who like their marshmallows burnt, and those who like them perfectly golden brown. I happen to be one of those who like my marshmallows burnt.. to a crisp.. but for the sake of this recipe, the majority rules. Which means nice little golden brown marshmallows to keep everyone happy. =)

These Mini Brownie S’more Bites are unbelievably easy to make and equally delicious. They have a soft chewy brownie crust and are topped with marshmallows that taste as if they were fresh from the campfire. And let’s not forget the slight crunch from the graham cracker and the rich burst of chocolate from the candy bar. Take these to your next picnic or get together, they will surely be a hit! I do have to set out a warning, these are highly addictive. I dare you to just eat one. I couldn’t, I had to stop myself at 6! =0

*At the bottom of this page, under the recipe, I have left a few helpful notes on making these Mini S’mores Brownie Bites. Please make sure to spray the top of your mini muffin pans with cooking spray! If you don’t do this the marshmallow may stick to the top of your pan and that would be a mess! I also want to add that I bought my mini muffin liners at Walmart and found a cuter selection over by the cake decorating supplies than by the actual cake mixes. If you try this recipe I would LOVE to hear back from you!
