If you have some scrap wood laying around this will be the perfect craft for you! This American Flag Hanger is so easy to make. It will look perfect hanging on your front porch for all the patriotic holidays coming up! I have made many of these and I just love how they turn out. Let me show you how you can get crafty and make a American Flag hanger of your own:
Materials:
- Piece of wood that is
- wood star (I bought a pack at Walmart for under $2)
- Masking tape
- Red, white and blue paints ( I used apple barrel paints)
- Antiquing wax or stain
- paint brushes
- Drill (If you plan to hang this)
- Wire
- Pencil (for the wire)
How to:
Step 1: Paint the entire front side of the board with white paint, allow paint to dry. You should probably paint the sides too! I didn’t but now I wish I would have.
Step 2: Use the masking tape to create a flag on to the board. It should look something like this:
Step 3: Paint the stripes red. Be careful not to paint into the box that will be blue with the star. Allow the paint to dry.
Step 4: Take all the tape off including the tape around the box where it will be blue.
Step 5: Once the tape is off you can then reline the blue box. You will have to move the tape out a little further so it matches up with the end red and white stripes.
Step 6: Paint the box you just created with the tape blue.
Step 7: Once all the paint is dry take a sanding block over the entire flag and the star to rough it up some. You all know I love my grunge look! LOL
Step 8: After sanding the flag, I then took some antiquing wax over it. I dipped my paint brush in the wax, brushed some off, and then painted the entire flag. As soon as I was done I took an old rag over it to blend it in some. You will want to use this same technique on the star.
Step 9: Next, add the wire to hang the flag. To do this, I drilled a hole in each corner. I then put the wire through the holes and curled the tips of the wire with a pencil. I used some rusty wire I had in the garage for this project.
( This Fiskar scissors are amazing for crafting! They cut through just about anything!)
Step 10: The very last step is to glue the star in the middle of the blue box on the flag. I just used my hot glue gun for this but I think E-6000 or wood glue would work just as well.
