DIY Bunny Frame Craft Tutorial

Hey friends, it’s Emily from Burlap Kitchen, and today we’re making this adorable bunny frame! This sweet spring project has so many charming little details — a painted bunny, carrot accent, rustic wax finish, and a little raffia bow to tie it all together. It’s a fun craft for Easter or spring decorating and would look so cute on a shelf, mantel, or tiered tray.

Materials List

  • Bunny frame craft kit (you can get your HERE)
  • Acrylic paint (Vintage white, gray [or black and white to mix your own gray], country twill [tan], vintage rose, orange, and green)
  • Waverly Antique Wax
  • Dixie Belle Antique Wax
  • Baby wipe
  • Sandpaper or sanding block
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Black paint marker or fine black marker for eyes and face details
  • Pink blush for ears
  • Raffia
  • Twine
  • Optional: wire for hanging, ruler for drawing a straight line

Step 1: Paint the Backer Piece

Start by painting the backer piece with Vintage White paint. Set it aside and let it dry completely. I like to use my hair dryer to speed up the drying time.

Step 2: Antique the Frame

Using a baby wipe, apply Waverly Antique Wax to the frame. This gives it a soft, rustic stained look. Let it dry fully before moving on.

Step 3: Mix and Paint the Bunny

For the bunny, mix white and black paint to create a medium gray. If you don’t have the exact gray you want in your craft stash, mixing your own works great.

Paint the bunny and let it dry completely.

Step 4: Paint the Bunny Details

Paint the bunny’s snout using Country Twill.

Then paint the nose and heartwith Vintage Rose.

Next, paint the carrot with your orange and green acrylic paint. This piece can be assembled two different ways depending on the look you want:

  • flat with the frame

  • or layered so it pops out a bit more

Step 5: Sand All the Pieces

Once all the painted pieces are dry, lightly sand everything for a distressed farmhouse finish.

A little note: we include a piece of sandpaper with every cutout order, so you’ll have something to get started with right away.

Step 6: Assemble the Frame

Glue the frame in place, making sure the little holes line up if you want to add wire later for hanging.

Step 7: Stain the Edges of the Bunny and Other Pieces

Then sand the bunny again if needed and add Dixie Belle Antique Wax around the edges. I like to use the darker wax straight from the brush around the outside edges first, then go over the whole piece with the excess mostly offloaded from the brush.

Do the same around the other painted pieces for a soft, aged look.

Step 8: Glue the Main Pieces Down

Glue the bunny into place first. Then decide how you want to attach the carrot:

  • Keep it level with the frame

  • Or build it up for more dimension

Both options are cute, so it just depends on the look you like best.

Step 9: Add the Face Details

Add the eyes, then glue the snout and nose into place.

Draw a line down the center and add a few little dots for extra detail. Then add a bit of pink blush inside the ears for a soft, sweet finish.

Step 10: Add the Bows

Make a small raffia bow and glue it in place. Fluff and crumple the raffia a bit so it looks the way you want, then trim it down.

I also added a little twine bow to the carrot, which turned out really cute.

I ended up not using the heart on my finished piece, but you absolutely can if you want to add it.

Finished Bunny Frame

And that’s it — your bunny frame is practically done! You can string some rusty wire, twine, or ribbon through the two holes at the top for hanging, simply tie a bow and use this decor piece as a leaner, or other creative use.  This project turned out super cute and is such a sweet little spring decoration.

Let me know what you think and whether you’d layer the carrot for dimension or keep it flush with the frame! Happy crafting!
