DIY Coffee Filter Flowers

Remember when I showed you how to dye coffee filters with coffee? (If you missed it, you can check that out here: How to Dye Coffee Filters using Coffee & Food Dye) You are going to need a few of those for this project. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make these beautiful coffee filter flowers! Let’s get started!

Supplies You’ll Need:

Step 1: Fold The Coffee Filters

First, to make one flower you will need 4 coffee filters. Fold all of the coffee filters in half, then in half again, then in half again, use your thumbs and really press and crease the folds so they stay.

Step 2: Cut The Petal Shapes

Fold your coffee filters one more time in half but this time do not crease it. Round the top of the wide part of the coffee filters with a pair of scissors. When you unfold the filters, you should have heart shapes.

TIP: If you wait to dye your filters directly after this step you will get nice dark edges. I fold them plain white, cut the rounded edge, plop them into my dye, then into the oven.

Step 3: Prepare Your Coffee Filter Petal Layers

Now it is time to cut out some of the heart shapes. You have 4 coffee filters so each time you will cut one more heart section. Your first filter cut one heart, the second filter cut 2 hearts, on the third filter cut out 3 hearts, and the fourth filter cut 4 hearts. Use the diagram below to help with cutting.

Step 4: Hot Glue Petal Layers

Next, Overlap the hearts on the end and glue them so they form a cone. Do this to all of the filter layers.

For the smallest layers, you won’t be able to overlap the hearts quite the same. To prepare the smallest one I use glues stick glue to roll it tight and glue it. I do the same for the two heart layer but you will want to make that one a bit looser.

When you have them all rolled and glued you should have something like this.

Step 5: Assemble Your Flower for First Fitting

Then, it’s time to start building your coffee filter flower. Before gluing, put the flower together and make sure everything fits nicely. Some of the interior layers will probably need trimmed at the narrow point of the cones so they nestle inside one another nicely. To put your coffee filter flower together start with the biggest cone and work all the way down to the single one putting each layer inside the other. Below is an example of what this should look like.

Step 6: Final Assembly — Gluing Your Flower Together

Now take the flower apart sitting each layer in order, biggest to smallest. Next, add glue the top of the cones (the interior of the flower) and gently stick them inside each layer.

When you’re finished gluing your flowers will look something like this. Pretty, right?

Step 7: Add the Stems

Now it’s time to add the stems to your coffee filter flowers.

Flower 8

Use the pointy end of the shish Kabob stick to poke a hole through the glue at the bottom of your flower. Then, cut the point off of the stick, add glue to the tip, and insert it into the hole you just made. Next, put a little glob of glue around the base so it is secure to the stick.

Flower 9

Finally, glue and wrap the floral tape around the flower stem. The floral tape says that it is self-sticking but that depends on the brand. I had to add a little glue as I went down the stick to make it cover well and stick together.

Optional Step:

To make the flowers a little more durable I like to spray them with a clear sealant. And here’s what I use –> Mod podge Sealant.

And that’s all there is too it! Do you plan on giving this project a try?
