DIY Dollar Tree Farmhouse Wooden Bunny Craft Tutorial

Hey, friends, it’s Emily from Burlap Kitchen! Who’s looking forward to Spring? Today we’re going to take one of these dollar tree bunny cutouts and give it a little bit of a makeover. Let’s make a super cute Farmhouse Wooden Bunny together to celebrate spring!

Here are the supplies you’ll need for following along:

Supplies:

  • Dollar Tree Wooden Bunny Cutout
  • Small wooden heart cutouts (from our Hearts Pack HERE)
  • Antique Wax
  • Clear or white candle wax
  • Acrylic paint (off-white, pink, black)
  • Plastic puddy knife (a scrapper usually used for drywall)
  • Dotting tool or paint brush
  • Small sponge
  • Ribbon, fabric strips, and/or twine for making a bow
  • Greenery
  • Rusty Wire (whiskers)
  • A little brown craft paper
  • Word or letter stamps & ink, or a black felt pen
  • Small wooden Button (from our Multi-Size Button Pack HERE)
  • Wooden half bead (for nose)
  • Thin wire (for whiskers), and wire cutters to cut them to size
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1: Add Antique Wax to the Wooden Bunny Cutout and Hearts

So the first thing I did was use some Waverly antique wax and stained the entire bunny. I applied it with a baby wipe and then wiped it off a little if it was too thick in some spots.

I also used two hearts from our heart pack, and I stained those as well. You can find them HERE.

Step 2: Add Antique Wax and Candle Wax

Next, after the antique wax was dry, I went over the bunny cutout with a wax candle. This step makes it so that the acrylic paint in the next step scrapes off easier.

Step 3: Paint Your Wooden Bunny

Then we’re going to put a layer of white paint on it and let it dry.

Step 4: Scrape Some Of the Paint Off

Using a plastic puddy knife, gently scrape up and down the painted body of the bunny. It peels the paint off really easily because I added that wax over it first. So once I got that scraped off a bit, then I used my sanding block and went over it a little bit more to give it an antique worn look.

Step 5: Paint Your Wooden Bunny’s Ears

Next I took a small sponge with a little pink paint and painted the ears a little bit. Now, I did go up just a little bit further than I wanted to with the pink, so keep an eye on that when you do yours. Let that dry.

Step 6: Make a Bow

Next I used my bow maker to make a pretty bow. This tool is super quick and easy to use and I use it for almost all of my large bow making! If you’re interested in picking up one for yourself, you can find these bow makers HERE. (affiliate link)

First, I added some twine to tie my bow together. I coffee dyed some cheesecloth, wrung it out, dried it good, and inserted it into my bow maker. I also added additional layers to my bow by adding some strips of fabric I got from Hobby Lobby. Then I tied it all together. I did leave the strings a little bit long on this one. I wanted to try something a little bit different.

Step 7: Assemble Your Wooden Bunny

I chose to wrap a long piece of the yellow plaid fabric around my bunny’s neck, as almost like a collar and hot glue the bow in place.

I also hot glued the antique wax stained hearts down for the feet. And again, they’re from our heart pack that you can find HERE.

A little greenery can add some extra Spring too! I tucked some around the bow to see where I wanted it.

Step 8: Make a Paper Tag

I also decided to use some brown craft paper to make a little tag. Using some stamps and ink, I added the word “hop”. You could simply write a word with a felt marker or pen also.

Then I crinkled it up some just to give it that rustic look. Once it was crinkled up, I did go over it a little bit with some more stamping ink just to give it an even more antique look. Then I hot glued that to the center of my bow and added one of the buttons from our button pack on top and glued all my greenery in place.

Step 9: Paint the Face, Add Whiskers, and Nose on Your Wooden Bunny

Next I’m using our dotting tool and adding some eyes. I took a wooden half bead and painted it the same color pink as the ears, gave this bunny some cheeks, and added some rusty wire for the whiskers that I just hot glued in place.

And then I hot glued the little half bead over top the center where all the wire meets. Next, I drew a little mouth below the nose with my Sharpie felt marker. I did go back and add white to the center of the eyes, which I don’t know if I’m loving… I might go back over that with the black.

Let me know what you think of this project and if you plan to give this Dollar Tree Farmhouse Wooden Bunny a try!
