DIY Family Sign

DIY Family Sign

Pin me! – Pinterest

I’ve been looking for a cute family sign to sit on my shelf in our living room. After looking some up I decided to just make one of my own. It was pretty easy to make and actually turned out really cute! Let me show you how to make one of your own! :

Materials:

  • Wood wall hanger from Walmart. (found in craft section. I roughed mine up some with paints)
  • Printer and printer paper
  • left over morning coffee
  • Lighter (please, please, please be careful with this part)
  • Mod Podge
  • foam brush
  • Ribbon
  • button
  • Picks of your choice
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1: You can print anything you want, but I chose to print my families last name. You can copy what I wrote and replace my last name for yours if you’d like.

Step 2: Coffee dye the paper and burn the edges (if you want). Before coffee dying make sure the printer ink is completely dry. I recommend letting it dry for 1-2 hours before coffee dying. To coffee dye the paper I just soaked the paper in some left over morning coffee for about 10 minutes. Hold the paper up to allow the excess coffee to drip off. Next, lay the paper on a cookie sheet and bake at the lowest possible setting for about 20 minutes.

Once the paper is dry you can burn the edges. Please promise me you won’t burn your house down doing this! I recommend doing this over a sink so you are close to water. I work in VERY small sections at a time. Barley light the paper, quickly blow it out, and then carefully use your fingers to pat out the ashes.

Step 3: Mod Podge the paper to the board. I also applied a coat of Mod Podge over the entire paper that way it can be wiped off when cleaning.

Step 4: Once the Mod Podge is dry you can begin to embellish which happens to be my favorite part!  I used some picks from Walmart and added the famous re-fabbed bow. I also decided to put a button in the middle to add a little extra fluff, lol.
