DIY Farmhouse Butterfly Decor on Wood Slice Tutorial | Beautiful Tiered Tray Decor

Today I’m going to show you something really cute you can make using one of our butterfly cutouts! This simple project combines scrapbook paper, rustic paint techniques, and a few charming embellishments to create a sweet farmhouse-style decor piece. It’s perfect for spring decorating, shelf decor, or even as a handmade gift. Let’s make this cute little butterfly wood slice decor together!

Materials You’ll Need

  • Wooden butterfly cutout (Grab your set HERE)

  • Scrapbook paper (pattern of your choice)

  • Mod Podge

  • Scissors

  • Sanding block or sandpaper

  • Small wood slice base

  • Skyline Blue acrylic paint

  • Waverly Antique Wax

  • Baby wipe (for applying wax)

  • White acrylic paint

  • Palette knife or palette tool

  • Raffia

  • Faux greenery sprigs

  • Small decorative flowers

  • Button

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1: Trace and Cut the Scrapbook Paper

Start by placing the butterfly cutout on top of your scrapbook paper and tracing around it. I positioned mine so the pretty blue floral pattern would sit right in the center of the butterfly.

Carefully cut out the shape with scissors so it fits neatly onto the wooden cutout.

Step 2: Adhere the Paper to the Butterfly

Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the butterfly cutout. Then place the scrapbook paper piece on top and smooth it down with your fingers so there are no bubbles.

Let it dry completely. If any corners lift, just add a little more Mod Podge and press them back down.

Step 3: Sand the Edges

Once the Mod Podge is dry, use a sanding block to gently sand around the edges of the butterfly. This helps remove excess paper and gives you a nice, clean edge.

Step 4: Paint the Wood Slice Base

Next, paint your wood slice using Skyline Blue acrylic paint. I didn’t paint all the way to the edge because I wanted some of the natural wood to show through for a rustic farmhouse look.

Let the paint dry completely.

Step 5: Distress the Base

Lightly sand the painted wood slice with your sanding block. Then apply Waverly Antique Wax using a baby wipe to give the wood slice a deeper, rustic finish.

Step 6: Add a Chippy Paint Effect

For a chippy farmhouse look, place a small amount of white paint on a palette tool. Offload most of the paint, then lightly drag the tool across the wood slice surface.

This creates a beautiful layered, weathered effect.

Step 7: Distress the Butterfly

Now return to the butterfly and apply a little antique wax around the edges. This slightly darkens the edges and helps blend everything together for a vintage farmhouse feel.

Step 8: Create the Raffia Bow

Take a piece of raffia and form a small bow. I like to crimp the ends with my fingers to give it a fuller look. Glue the bow onto the wood slice where you want it positioned.

Step 9: Add Greenery and Flowers

Glue a small piece of faux greenery behind the raffia bow. Then add a few small decorative flowers for a layered spring look.

Finish this section by gluing a button in the center of the raffia bow.

Step 10: Attach the Butterfly

Finally, glue your decorated butterfly cutout to the center of the wood slice.

And that’s it! This project turned out so cute and makes a perfect little piece of spring farmhouse decor.

Let me know what you think and if you plan to give this one a try!
