DIY Farmhouse Embroidery Hoop Valentine Ornament

Hey friends! Valentines Day is just a couple weeks away. Can you believe that? Today we’re making the sweetest farmhouse-style Embroidery Hoop Valentine Ornament using a wooden hoop, a wooden heart, some fabric, and a few embelishments. This project is simple, cozy, and full of rustic charm — perfect for gifting or decorating your home for Valentine’s Day. (Video Tutorial at the bottom of this post.)

Materials You’ll Need

  • Embroidery hoop (any size you like)
  • Wooden heart cutout (you can get the one I used from a heart pack HERE)
  • Fabric (linen or neutral cotton works beautifully)
  • Truffle brown paint
  • Water (to thin paint for a stain effect)
    • Or use a brown liquid stain
  • Baby wipe
  • Tuscan Red acrylic paint (I like the Apple Barrel brand for this)
  • Sanding block or sandpaper
  • Dixie Belle Antique Wax
  • Blending tool (you can pick one up from my shop HERE)
  • Faux greenery and little flowers
  • Twine or lace
  • Small paper or cardstock tag
  • Black marker
  • Button
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors

Step 1: Create a Rustic Embroidery Hoop Finish

First, start by staining your wooden embroidery hoop. I was out of my usual Waverly Antique Wax, so I improvised! I mixed truffle brown paint with a little water and applied it to my embroidery hoop using a baby wipe. This gives it a soft, stained-wood look that works beautifully for farmhouse decor.

Set the hoop aside and let it dry completely.

Step 2: Paint the Valentine Heart

Next, paint the wooden heart using Tuscan Red acrylic paint (or your favorite color of paint). Tuscan Red by Apple Barrel is such a gorgeous, rich red — perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Once dry, lightly sand the heart to soften the edges and distress it a bit.

Finish it off with a light layer of Dixie Belle Antique Wax to give it that rustic, worn-in look. I love using my Blending Tool for this!

Step 3: Add Fabric to the Hoop

Then, unscrew the embroidery hoop and sandwich your fabric between the inner and outer rings. Tighten it back up, pull the extra fabric on the back so it’s tight, then trim away the excess fabric.

💡 Tip: Save your fabric scraps! They’re great for future projects — scarecrows in the fall, tiny embellishments, or patch-style accents.

Step 4: Add Greenery at the Top of your Hoop

Next, hot glue a small piece of faux greenery to the top of your embroidery hoop. I picked mine up from Hobby Lobby and use it all the time — I really need to grab more!

At this point, decide whether you want to add a twine or lace bow. I went back and forth and ultimately chose twine so there wasn’t too much white with the fabric and hoop — but I’d love to know what you prefer!

Step 5: Prepare the Tag

Write “XO” (which stands for hugs and kisses) on a small tag using a black marker.

Crumple it up a few times to soften it, then apply a little antique wax to age it and give it that rustic farmhouse feel.

Step 6: Assemble the Design

Then, trim a small amount off the bottom of the heart if needed so it fits nicely inside the hoop. Check out the video tutorial linked below to see how I did that. Glue the heart slightly off-center for a more relaxed, handmade look.

On the opposite side, hot glue the “XO” tag in place. Trim away any extra string so everything looks clean and intentional.

Step 7: Add the Details

Next, hot glue a button at the top center to anchor the design. Then add a few tiny decorative flowers (I found mine at Hobby Lobby — they’re so cute and come in multiple colors).

I like to lay everything out first before gluing so I can adjust until it feels just right. Once you’re happy, glue everything in place.

Step 8: Add the Hanger

Finish the ornament by tying a twine hanger to the top of the hoop. Adjust the length, trim the ends, and you’re done!
