DIY Rustic Flower Box

It’s no surprise that I love to up-cycle, so when I saw this empty box I knew I needed to do something with it. Since the 4th of July is just around the corner I thought I would turn it into some patriotic decor. I absolutely love how this turned out and I love even more that it was so budget-friendly. Let me show you how you can make your own DIY rustic flower box for your 4th of July decor.

Supplied Needed:

Step 1:

Begin by cutting any flaps off of the top of the box or glue them to the inside.

Step 2:

Next, take some old book pages or hymnals and begin to Mod Podge them around the outside of the box. You may have to lay a double layer depending on how thick your book pages are so the box design does not show through when the mod bodge dries.

Step 3:

Using a baby wipe, dip it into some antique wax and rub it all over the hymnal covered box. This will give your patriotic box a more rustic look.

Step 4:

Using your hot glue gun draw a star on some wax paper and allow it to dry. I only had wax paper for this step, but I think parchment paper would have worked better. The hot glue stuck to the wax paper and melted it some. Because of this I just cut the wax paper off of the star. You will get a better idea of how I did this by watching my craft tutorial on this 4th of July craft below.

Step 5:

Next, wrap fabric around the top of the up-cycled box to give an idea of where to glue the star. You will want to do this step because if not, the fabric will cover up the star. You will see I made this mistake when you watch the craft tutorial of this up-cycled rustic box. Glue the star in place.

Step 6:

To give your up-cycled box an even more rustic look rub some rub and buff over top the star. I used the color Spanish Copper.

Step 7:

Wrap a strip of fabric around the top of the box and tie a knot to the side. I used a piece of drop cloth. I didn’t like the color of it for this patriotic craft so I decided to dye it blue. To do this I added some water and blue acrylic paint to a bowl and drenched the fabric in it until it was completely covered. I then dried it and added some antique wax over it to give it a rustic look.

Step 8:

Glue a piece of floral foam to the bottom of the box and add the flowers of your choice along with some Spanish moss.  I used these pretty red flowers I found at Hobby Lobby and some white flowers I had in my craft stash.
