DIY Rustic Framed Mittens | Winter Home Decor

Hey friends! Today I’m sharing a super cute Christmas craft you can make using a thrifted frame. I found this one at Goodwill and loved the shape and details — it just needed a little holiday makeover! With some paint, twine, greenery, and our mitten cutouts, this frame turned into the sweetest winter decoration.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Primitive Skinny Mittens w/Snowflakes Craft Kit
  • Thrifted frame (any size or style you like)
  • Black Chalk Paint
  • Acrylic paint in White, Black, & Red
  • Rub ’n Buff (gold or antique gold looks great!)
  • Antique wax
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Extra piece of regular cardboard (to reinforce backing)
  • Sandpaper or sanding block
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Sponge or small paint applicator
  • White Sharpie Paint Effect Marker
  • Twine
  • Faux Greenery
  • Faux Red berries
  • Raffia
  • Rusty bell

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Paint and Antique the Frame

Firstly, start by painting your Goodwill frame with the black chalk paint. I recommend using chalk paint if your frame has a shiny surface because it grips and covers so much better –so definitely use that instead of standard acrylic if your frame has a glossy finish.

Let it dry, then lightly go over the raised areas with Rub ’n Buff for a distressed, vintage look.

Step 2: Prep the Cardboard Backing

Next, cut a piece of corrugated cardboard to fit inside your frame opening. Because corrugated cardboard is thin, you may want to glue it onto another piece of regular cardboard to give it more stability.

Next, we’re going to paint our background for our framed mittens. I decided to paint the corrugated side with white.

Once dry, dry brush some black paint over the top to bring out the texture.

Finish with a light touch of Rub ’n Buff for a rustic, metallic highlight.

Step 3: Attach the Backing

Next, hot glue your finished cardboard piece into the back of the frame so the textured side shows through the front.

(You can paint the back of your frame if you want, but I skipped it since I was crafting this live and wanted to save time!)

Step 4: Paint the Mittens

Using our wood mitten cutouts, paint both mittens red with a small sponge so you get nice, even coverage.
Let them dry, then lightly sand for that signature rustic look.

While crafting live, you all suggested adding some detail to the top of the mittens — so I grabbed a Sharpie Paint Effect Marker and added simple lines. They turned out so cute!

Step 5: Add the Twine Hangers

Cut out a piece of thicker twine. Hot glue the ends to the back of each mitten so it looks like they’re hanging inside the frame.

Glue the twine to the back of the frame to secure the position. Then test out how you’d like them to be on your frame. I liked having one mitten sitting slightly higher than the other.

Step 6: Paint & Place Snowflakes

Paint your snowflake cutouts vintage white (FolkArt). Let dry and place them on the mittens for a cute snowy touch. Don’t glue yet — just lay everything out so you can arrange your greenery first and test the layout of everything first.

Step 7: Add Greenery & Berries

Next, hot glue small sprigs of greenery at the top of the frame. Add a few red berries for a festive pop.

Then, top it off with a raffia bow, trimmed to your liking. You could also use ribbon, twine, or anything else you like. For a extra cute touch, hot glue a rusty bell right in the center of your bow.

Step 8: Final Touches

Next, hot glue your snowflakes in place.
Lastly, if you’d like to add a rustic Christmas feel, add a little antique wax over the mittens.

And that’s it — your thrifted frame has been transformed into the cutest mitten-themed Christmas decoration!

This project came out so adorable, and I love how simple and customizable it is. Next time you’re at Goodwill, grab a pretty frame and give it a festive Christmas makeover. Let me know what you think — and if you plan to give this one a try!
