DIY Rustic Scarecrow Décor
Fall is in the air, and there’s no better way to welcome the season than with some charming rustic décor. This adorable wooden scarecrow will add a touch of warmth and whimsy to your home, whether it’s perched on your porch or sitting on a mantel. Best of all, it’s a fun and simple craft project you can complete in just a few hours!
Materials You’ll Need:
- A wooden block (approximately 7 inches tall. You Can find them HERE)
- Burlap fabric
- Raffia and natural twine
- Orange and plaid homespun fabric scraps
- Paint: cream or light tan for the face, blue for the body, orange for the nose, black for facial details
- Paintbrushes (various sizes)
- Sharpie paint effect markers (You can find them HERE on my affiliate link)
- A wood button
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Sandpaper (optional for distressing)
- Scissors
- A small wooden tag with the word “Blessed”
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Wooden Block
Start by choosing a wooden block that will form the base of your scarecrow. The one in the image is roughly 7 inches tall. Sand the edges and surface of the wood if you prefer a smoother look, but leaving it slightly rough can add to the rustic charm.
Step 2: Paint the Scarecrow’s Body and Face
Paint the lower part of the block with blue paint to create the scarecrow’s body. For the face, use a cream or light tan color on the top. Allow the paint to dry completely. You can add a second coat if needed for more coverage. Once dry, scuff up with a sanding block and add some antique wax if you prefer a more rustic look.

Step 3: Create the Scarecrow’s Hat
Cut a piece of burlap fabric large enough to wrap around the top of the wooden block. Secure it with a bit of hot glue, leaving the top open to stuff with raffia or natural twine. Tie the top of the burlap with a piece of raffia, creating the look of a rustic hat. For added detail, hot glue a large button where the raffia is tied, and add a small patch of plaid fabric to the hat.

Step 4: Add the Facial Details
Using a sharpie paint effect marker, carefully paint the scarecrow’s eyes and mouth. A simple smile and small dot eyes work great for this style. Once the black paint is dry, paint a small triangle for the nose using orange paint, I used the color toasted terracotta. Let it dry before moving on.

Step 5: Attach the Scarf and Tag
Cut a strip of plaid fabric and tie it around the scarecrow’s neck as a scarf. Secure it with a dab of hot glue to keep it in place. Then, hot glue the small wooden tag labeled “Blessed” onto the scarf. I also cut a small square if fabric and added it to the hat to add a little something extra.

Step 6: Display Your Scarecrow
Find the perfect spot to showcase your new creation! This scarecrow looks great as part of a fall display on a porch, or you can place it indoors as a festive centerpiece.
This simple DIY rustic scarecrow is a delightful project that brings a touch of homemade charm to your fall décor. With just a few materials and a little creativity, you can create a piece that not only celebrates the season but also highlights your crafting skills. Happy crafting!
