DIY Rustic Watering Can Decor | Craft Tutorial
I’m so excited to finally share this finished craft kit with you—and I think you’re going to absolutely love it. We’re turning a simple set of wooden cutouts into an adorable primitive-style rustic watering can with sweet garden charm. Ready to make your own Rustic Watering Can decor?
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Wooden watering can kit (found HERE)
- Acrylic paint: Stark navy blue, medium gray, metallic silver, brown oxide, red, white, yellow
- Sponges or paintbrushes
- Sanding block
- Antique wax (I used Dixie Belle)
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Bowdabra (optional, for making the bow)
- Fabric strips
- Sizzle (crinkle filler)
- Small faux flowers
- Extra fine point Sharpie (for writing on tag)
- Twine
- Small button
Step 1: Paint the Watering Can
Start by painting the main body of the watering can, the handle, and both spout pieces with a rich navy blue paint. Let all the pieces dry completely.

Step 2: Paint the Tools and Daisy
Next, paint the small garden fork and shovel with medium gray paint. Once dry, lightly dab metallic silver over them to give a metal effect. Then use brown oxide paint to dab over the pieces to create a rusty, aged look. Repeat this same rusting effect on the spout attachment piece.

For the daisy, use white paint for the petals and yellow for the center. A sponge works great for this!

Step 3: Add Color and Detail to the Tools
Next, paint the handles of the fork and shovel red, then add white stripes for a pop of contrast. It gives them a whimsical touch that turned out so cute! Once dry, sand the pieces lightly and apply antique wax for that rustic, worn finish.

Step 4: Distress and Assemble
Now it’s time to bring everything together! Lightly sand the watering can base, handle, and spout, then apply antique wax using a blending tool or cloth.

Glue the handle and both spout pieces onto the watering can base.

Sand and wax the daisy as well so it blends with the rest of the project. Then glue it into place near the bottom of the watering can.

Step 5: Make and Attach the Bow
Using the Bowdabra (or by hand), create a cute bow with layered fabrics and a little bit of sizzle for extra texture. Glue it to the top of the watering can.

Step 6: Finish the Tag & Final Details for your Rustic Watering Can
Arrange and glue the fork and shovel so they look like they’re tucked under or hanging from the bow. Then, add some small faux flowers among the bow for a sweet finishing touch.

Paint the wooden tag white, then sand it lightly and apply some antique wax for aging. Using an extra fine point Sharpie, write “25¢” on it.

Thread some twine through the hole (no knot needed—just glue it in place) and secure the tag near the bow.

Add a button to the center of the bow, hot glue everything in place.

Finish with a few paint dots on the spout for detail.

Step 7: Display and Enjoy! And that’s it—your primitive watering can craft is complete! I love how rustic and charming this one turned out. It’s perfect for spring or garden-themed decor. Let me know what you think and if you plan to give it a try!
