You have to give this Uncle Sam a try. This is such a fun craft and a great way to use up some scrap wood. He will look great with all my patriotic decor!

Materials:

  • 2X4 Cut to about 9 1/4 inch long
  • paint stick cut to about 5 1/2 inches
  • white chalk paint
  • red chalk paint
  • Antique wax
  • old rag
  • sand paper
  • Stamps ( I thin paint brush and black paint would work, too!)
  • Small piece of drop cloth or any skin toned material you may have laying around
  • 2 small buttons
  • 1 wood bead
  • Spanish Moss
  • blush
  • Q- tip
  • twine
  • paint brushes
  • Patriotic napkin
  • Mod Podge
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

How to:

Step 1: Paint the entire board and paint stick with white chalk paint. You could probably get away with a different type of paint here, but I just really prefer the chalk paint. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 2: Once the paint is dry, place the paint stick where you would like the hat to go and use a pencil to mark it. Take some red paint and a thin paint brush and begin to paint red stripes onto the top half of the hat. The pencil mark will help you to know how far down to paint your red stripes on. You will be able to see this better in this video tutorial- ( COMING SOON!).

Step 3: Make sure all the paint is dry. Sand both the 2X4 and the paint stick to give the roughed up look. Once both are sanded down you can antique them. To do this I paint the wax on and then wipe it off with an old rag. Before moving on be sure that all the wax is dry. I blow dryer will help speed up this process.

Step 4:  Paint the bottom half of the 2X4 with Mod Podge and apply the patriotic napkin. Make sure you peel off the baking of the napkin before you do this.

Step 5: Cut a piece of drop cloth into the shape of a half circle.. this will be the face. Before gluing it down see where you want the rim go the hat (paint stick) to go. Then glue down the face. Once that is glued down you can glue in the rim of the hat.

Step 6: For the beard and eye brows I used spanish moss. The eye brows were a little tricky. I just grabbed a few small pieces of the Spanish Moss and bunched them together. I then took a very small dab of glue and gently used my fingers to smoosh all the moss together. Don’t glue the eye brows on until you have glued the eyes on. You will have to do some trimming on both the beard and the eye brows.

Step 7: Glue two black buttons down for the eyes and a wood bead for the nose. I did scuff up the nose and add some antique wax to it so it matched the rest of the project. Now you can glue Uncle Sams eyebrows on. I also took some blush and gave him some roses cheeks.

Step 8: For a few final touches I stamped the numbers 1776 onto Uncle Sams hat and added a twine belt.
