DIY Vintage Hotmat Christmas Ornament Wall Hanger

Add a touch of vintage elegance to your holiday decor with this vintage ornament wall hanger idea! I found these quilted hot mats at a thrift store and decided I was going to turn them into some Christmas decor.

Supplies List:

  • A quilted hot mat
  • A spray bottle with a water and instant coffee mixture
  • Cardboard
  • Decorative paper
  • Mod Podge
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Rub-and-buff
  • Scissors
  • Poly-Fill
  • Medium weight twine for hanging
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Bow Maker ( You can find it HERE on my affiliate link)
  • Rustic rusty bell
  • Faux Greenery

Step 1: Spray for Grunge Vintage Look for your Ornament

I used one of them and sprayed them with a little water and instant coffee in a spray water bottle. I sprayed them all over and blow dried it to give it that grunge look.

Next I took my place mat, laid it over a piece of cardboard and traced it out onto the cardboard. I cut out the circle to make a backer for the ornament so it lays flat and sturdy when we go to hang it.

Step 2: Cut out & Glue Cardboard Backer

Then I started hot gluing the edges of the place mat onto the cardboard, leaving about 3 inches unglued at the top so I can add filling and the top of the ornament in the next steps.

Step 3: Cut out Ornament Top & Decoupage Textured Paper

Next, I used some more cardboard and cut it down to a rectangle shape to resemble the top of a Christmas ornament. Once cut out, I applied some Mod Podge and glued down some pretty textured paper I found at Hobby Lobby. I trimmed off the excess paper.

Step 4: Paint & Buff Ornament Top

Then I used some metallic gold paint and used a sponge to apply it over the textured paper to give it a beautiful shimmery look. I also added a little Rub-And-Buff to it to give it more of a vintage look. I made sure it was good and dry before adding it to the rest of the ornament in the next step.

Step 5: Glue Ornament Top Between Layers

Next, I hot glued it to the cardboard backer on the inside, tucking it between the layers.

Step 6: Fill Ornament with Poly-Fil

Then I added some Poly-Fill to fill my Christmas ornament and give it some dimension.

Step 7: Seal Ornament

I then hot glued the rest of the hot mat to the backing board to seal it in.

Step 8: Add Embellishments

Next, I added some greenery to the top of the ornament and securing it down with hot glue. I also decided to add a burlap ribbon bow to my project. My bow maker came in really handy for this. I added a rusty bell to the center of the bow and secured everything down well with hot glue.

Step 9: Add Hanging Twine

Finally, to be able to hang this project, I hot glued some medium weight twine to the back side, covering it with some of the burlap to make it extra secure.

I had a hard time deciding how to embellish this ornament and wondered if the burlap bow was too heavy for this project. What do you think? I’m totally open to ideas on what to switch it out with. Let me know in the comments if you plan on giving this project a try!
