Dollar Tree – Patriotic Tag Makeover

Today I am going to show you how to give a Dollar Tree tag a rustic patriotic makeover. Anytime I see these tags at Dollar Tree I like to grab a few to keep in my craft stash. It always amazes me how unbelievable easy they are to transfer into something amazing. Let me walk you through the process and show you just how fun and easy this 4th of July DIY was to create!  Come follow along and learn how you can create this Dollar Tree – Patriotic Tag Makeover!

Supplies needed:

Step 1:First, Paint the entire Dollar Tree tag blue. You will need two coats of paint. Make sure to allow the paint to dry in between each coat. I used the back side because it was easier than sanding off all the glitter on the front.

Step 2: Cut a piece of cardboard in a circle and then cut a small circle out of the middle to resemble a washer. I found that one of the smaller paint bottles made the perfect size circle.

Step 3: Paint your cardboard washer to look rusty. To do this, paint the cardboard with a dark gray color. Next, add a layer of Mod Podge and sprinkle cinnamon over top. Shake the excess cinnamon off and then dab some more Mod Podge over top the cinnamon to seal it. Once the Mod Podge is dry take a small brush and add some black paint randomly for more detail.

Step 4: Cut the bottom stripped half of the printable off and Mod Podge it to the bottom of of the tag. Use a sanding block to remove the edges for a nice clean finish.

Step 5: Next, rip around the top USA half of the printable. In the video I sprayed coffee on the printables.. I later decided to add antique wax to them so this step was unnecessary.

Step 6: Sand the top half of the tag to give the blue paint a more rustic / farmhouse look.

Step 7: Glue the faux washer into place around the circle of the tag.

Step 8: Add rub and buff around the edges and middle  of the tag.

Step 9: Using white paint and a skewer add dots to the top blue part of the tag to create stars.

Step 10: Once everything is dry, Mod Podge the back of the ripped USA sign and Mod Podge it to the middle of the page where the two printables meet. I slightly angled mine for a little more of an aged rustic look.

Step 11: Next, add some nautical rope to the hole so you can hang it. I also glued a burlap bow to the bottom of the rope to make it look pretty.

Step 12: At this point I decided I wanted my project a little bit darker. I decided to take some antique wax over the entire project. To do this, just dip a baby wipe in a little bit of the wax and wipe it over your project.
