How to turn dollar tree rugs into cute valentines day envelope pillows

It should be no surprise that Dollar Tree is one of my favorite places to shop! While there a few weeks ago I found these rugs and knew they had to come hope with me. My first thought was some sort of a pillow. When I started playing around with them I quickly realized they would make a cute envelope. I thought making this Dollar Tree rug envelope pillow would be perfect with Valentines Day just around the corner.

Before leaving Dollar Tree make sure to flip these rugs upside down and take a look at them. I am thinking they would make gorgeous farmhouse-like place mats for the dinner table, what do you think? AND.. I would think you could just throw them in the washing machine to clean them? I would have to check on that, though.

Ok, let’s get started with this super cute craft!

Materials needed:

  • 2 bath rugs from Dollar Tree
  • Poly-fil ( or cut up an old pillow you no longer want!)
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • assorted ribbons for a bow
  • button
  • twine
  • Dollar Tree wood chalkboard heart tag
  • white marker to write on wooden tag

How to:

Step 1: Fold one of the placemats in half. Make sure to line it up as even as possible. Also, take note to both sides of the rug and make sure the side you like best will be showing. I chose the fuzzy side for this step and the not so fuzzy side for the envelope flap. I thought the different textures added a little something.

Step 2: Hot glue both sides of the rug you just folded in half to make a little pocket. Then, run your glue along the top gluing it together, but leaving about a 2 inch gap. You will need that to stuff it.

Step 3: Using the hole we created in step 2, begin to stuff the pillow. Once it is full, hot glue the gap together.

Step 4: Now it is time to create the flap using the second rug. To do this, take the rug and lay the corner over the pillow in a flap-like position. Get an idea of what size you want your flap to be and cut the rug to that size. Make sure to leave a little overhang in the back so it is easier to glue. Hot glue the flap in place.

Step 5: Take some cute ribbon and glue it so that it outlines the flap.

Step 6: Write something cute on the wood chalkboard heart tag using a white marker and glue it to the tip of the envelope flap.

Step 7: Make a cute bow and glue it to the top of the heart. I always use the re-fab bow.. that is my go-to! LOL. I also added a button to the center of the bow for an extra burst if cuteness.
