Empty Oats Container & Coffee Filter Flower Vase
How to Turn an Empty Oatmeal Container into a FLower Vase
I’m wrapping up Coffee Filter Week with this cute flower vase made from coffee filters. Along with my coffee filter flowers, this vase will be the perfect addition to your spring decor! Not only are they super fun to make but you probably already have everything to make them on hand. Now, let’s get started!
Supplies:
- Empty oats container
- Coffee dyed coffee filters
- Mod podge
- paint brush
- small old bowl
- Twine
- Coffee dyed strips of fabric
- Coffee dyed paper doilies
- Stencil ( I used my Cricut Explore Air 2 )
- spanish moss
- Foam for the inside of the vase to hold the flowers.
STEP 1: Coffee dye coffee filters and make sure they are dry. If you’re not sure how to do this click here —> HOW TO COFFEE DYE COFFEE FILTERS
STEP 2: Brush one side of the coffee filter entirely with mod podge and begin sticking them on the oats container; you will need a few layers. Carefully press out any creases with your hands. A few won’t hurt as long as they are flat to the container. Also, make sure to wrap the filters around the top and bottom of the container. See photo below.
STEP 3: Once oats container is completely covered in coffee filters, allow to dry. If you can see part of the container through the coffee filters then apply a few more layers in that area and allow to dry.
STEP 4: Once the container is Dry use mod podge to secure the coffee dyed paper doily. I ONLY brushed the outer edges. If you brush the mod podge over the writing it will smear. I used my Cricut to write one of my favorite bible verses onto the doily. If you do not have a Cricut you could use stencils. Stenciling on the beginning letter of your last name would be a very cute idea.
Below is a better look at the doily I made using my Cricut. If you have a Cricut the possibilities are endless of what you could do here.
STEP 5: Next I wrapped a piece of twine around the vase a few times and tied a bow. Just remember when you are making this vase that it is yours! Have fun with it! Just because I wrapped twine around mine doesn’t mean you have to do the same. Do what makes you happy =)
STEP 6: Finally I added a piece of coffee dyed fabric and tied it in a knot. Here’s a little tip to consider: When working with fabric if you rip it rather then cut it you will get nice frayed edges. Also, if you wait and coffee dye after ripping the fabric you will get nice dark frayed edges.
TIPS: To secure the flowers in the vase add a piece of foam to the bottom. You can also fill the container with dry rice and secure the flowers in the rice. Adding Spanish moss to the top of the vase helps to hide the flower stems.
