How to create a farmhouse style faux door
Today I’m going to be showing you how to create a farmhouse style faux door. I was honestly surprised by how easy and budget friendly this project was to create. Before you go buying any supplies look around and see what you already have on hand. This will help to reduce the cost and maybe clean up your garage a bit, haha.
This DIY project is the perfect piece to add to your home décor. You can dress this cute craft up for any season by switching out the wreath. I’ll show you what it looks like for both fall and Christmas. Also, if you watch my video tutorial you will see how to make a cute grapevine pumpkin wreath for your faux door. But don’t think you have to make the pumpkin wreath for this to be cute. You could totally add any seasonal wreath you may already have on hand, and it will look just as cute.
Materials needed:
- 3 pieces of scrap wood. I’m using a fence board I found in my garage. I believe you can buy them at Lowes for around $3 a piece.
- 2 pieces of smaller wood
- drill
- Black screws
- drill bit if pre-drilling
- Stain
- Rag
- Gloves
- White chalk paint
- Plastic trial if you are going for the chippy wood look
- Black hook
- Black drawer handle
Step 1: Stain all 5 boards using a rag. The fence boards are a little harder to stain because they really soak it in. Make sure you are wearing gloves.
Step 2: Allow the stain to dry overnight. This is important! You can see in my video that I did NOT allow the stain to dry overnight. Because of this the stain mixed with the white making a brownish color. It still turned out cute but wasn’t the color I was hoping for, LOL.
Step 3: You will have to work quickly here so your paint does not dry on you. Using a chip brush begin to brush the paint on and immediately scrap it off with the plastic trial. This will create that faux barn wood look that everyone loves so much. Allow all your boards to dry.
Step 4: Next, lay the larger boards together making sure they are even on the bottom. Then lay the two smaller pieces horizontally across the boards. You do not want the smaller boards even with the top, you will want to move them down some. You can get a better idea by watching my YouTube tutorial. Once, your two smaller boards are in place you can screw them in making sure each screw catches on the larger boards. I like to pre-drill before putting screws in, so my boards don’t crack.
Step 5: Screw the hook into place. I recommended holding a wreath up to it just to get an idea of where it will hang.
Step 6: Screw the handle into place. Again, I recommend laying the wreath in place just to get an idea of where to put the handle.
Step 7: Decorate your cute faux door any way you wish. For a fun way to make a pumpkin wreath make sure to watch my YouTube tutorial!
