DIY Budget-Friendly Upcycled Fall Scarecrow Décor

Hello friend! Today, I am going to be sharing with you how to made a budget-friendly DIY scarecrow for your fall décor.  If you love a good upcycle/recycle craft, you have to give this fun fall scarecrow craft a try. Not only is this scarecrow craft super cute, it is a very budget-friendly.  This cute fall décor would be a fun kids craft as well!  Did I mention this adorable scarecrow is made from…a Pringles can?!

Materials needed:

  • Mini Pringles can (that has been cleaned)
  • Empty Jell-O cup (that has been cleaned)
  • Acrylic paint: brown & white to make tan or a pre-mixed tan color, and orange
  • Black fabric marker or sharpie
  • Blush
  • Fabric material or jean scraps
  • Burlap
  • Twine
  • Raffia
  • Sunflower embellishments
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Let’s Get Started!

Step 1: Paint The Can

Use a small can of empty Pringles chips.  Mix white and brown acrylic paint to make a shade of beige/tan or use your favorite pre-mixed skin-toned color.  I used Apple Barrel paints for this.  Paint over the entire outside of the can of Pringles.  Let dry. You could use a heat gun or hair dryer to speed up the drying process.  If any of the label is still showing through the paint, you may need to give the can a second coat, and then dry.

Step 2: Add Raffia “Hair For Your Scarecrow

Take some strands of raffia and place them over the top center of the Pringles can, allowing strands to hang down over the sides of the can, secure the lid over the raffia, this will resemble the straw hair for your Scarecrow.   Trim away the excess raffia so that the strands hanging on each side of the can are about the same length of the can.

Step 3: Make a Hat Form

Next, glue an empty snack size container of applesauce/pudding/jello upside down onto the Pringles can lid. This will be the top/hat form for your Scarecrow.

Step 4. Add Burlap For The Hat & Tie

Wrap some burlap fabric around the top part of the can that is long enough to go around the circumfrance of the can as well as wide enough to cover the cup on top with extra to spare. Hot glue it around the top of the can.  Repeat this process so you have two layers of burlap fabric going around the Scarecrow’s top/hat.

Tie some twine or cord from the burlap around the top of the burlap fabric pieces, making a little bow in the center. Allow some burlap to be bunched up at the very top.  This will make the Scarecrow’s hat/beanie.

Step 5: Draw and Paint Your Scarecrow’s Face

Use a black marker, or acrylic pen to draw on two eyes for the Scarecrow.

Next, with orange acrylic paint, take a very fine paint brush and paint a triangle nose.  Use a heat gun to dry.

Using some cosmetic blush, take a q-tip and gently brush on some blush for the cheeks.

Then, use your black marker or acrylic pen and draw on a mouth.

Lastly, place a tiny white dots inside the each of the eyes  to bring your little scarecrow to life.

Step 6: Add Final Embellishments

Take some scrap fabric, old pair of denim jeans, or some other material you like, and cut out a small square for a patch. Hot glue it onto the scarecrow’s hat.

I also used the same old jeans I cut for the patch and cut out a strip of denim long enough to circle around the bottom of the scarecrow.  Do not cut the strip too wide so you don’t accidentally cover your scarecrow’s face.  Secure the denim around the bottom of the scarecrow using hot glue.

Lastly, glue a few sunflower embellishments onto the Scarecrow’s hat and denim color as well.  Feel free to be creative and use what you like!
