If you love to up-cycle and you love farmhouse then this project is definitely for you my friend. I made this adorable farmhouse light using an empty bottle of Olive Garden Italian Dressing. This DIY literally cost me nothing to make because I had all the supplies on hand and I’m hoping you do to! Let me show you how to make this Farmhouse Light:

Materials:

  • Empty bottle of Olive Garden Italian Dressing
  • Black chalk paint
  • White chalk paint
  • Waverly antique wax
  • paint brushes
  • pouncer or round paint brush
  • scrap piece of drop cloth (burlap would work here, too!)
  • Stamps (optional but cute!)
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • spanish moss
  • raffia
  • battery operated candle with removable bottom
  • scrap pieces of paper

Step 1: Clean the bottle very good! There was some sticky stuff left from the label which I did leave on the bottle. It will just add to the texture and painting over it will make it so it’s not sticky.

Step 2: Paint the entire bottle with black chalk paint and allow it to dry. Once dry and a second coat of the black chalk paint and allow to dry again.

Step 3: Dry brush the bottle with white chalk paint. To do this, dip your paint brush in the white paint and brush the majority of it off on an old rag or paper towel. You can then begin to brush the bottle. Allow to dry.

Step 4: Dip a paint pouncer into antique wax, dab a small amount off and then begin to pounce around the bottle. I like to make some spots lighter and some darker, this really adds to the “rust” look.

Step 5: Take a scrap piece of drop cloth and glue it around the center of the bottle. I made mine fringe because I really like the way it looks. Once that is glued on stamp a cute saying onto the front of the cloth. I chose ton stamp farm on it.

Step 6: Take some spanish moss and form it into a circle and place it around the mouth of the bottle. Don’t glue it down just yet, though.

Step 7: Ball up some pieces of scrap paper and stuff them into the bottle. This will help lift your candle up so the bulb stick out the top and doesn’t fall in. Take the bottom part of the candle off and insert the candle. Once you get your candle in you can glue the Spanish moss down if you wish. Just make sure you don’t glue it to the candle.

Step 8: The last step is to make a cute raffia bow and tie it around the neck of the bottle.
