How to turn an empty roll of toilet paper into a magnet

It’s no secret that I love to upcycle, and today that’s exactly what we’re going to be doing. I’m going to show you how to make a magnet using an empty roll toilet paper. This craft is so easy to make and turned out so cute. I think that these would make super cute gifts! And with Mother’s Day just around the corner, this would be the perfect inexpensive gift for Mom. Someone even suggested putting a gift card in it, and I think that’s a great idea.

I love working with empty rolls of toilet paper. I think there’s so many fun uses for them. Before using them, though, I highly recommend that you disinfect them. What I like to do is disinfect them and store them in a clothes basket in my craft closet. That way, as soon as I’m ready to use one, it’s already disinfected and ready to go.

Materials:

  • Empty roll of toilet paper that has been disinfected
  • Paint
  • Mod podge
  • Cute napkin
  • Paint brushes
  • Stapler or hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Spanish moss
  • Flower pick
  • Raffia or ribbon

How to:

Step 1: First, you’re going to want to paint your empty roll of toilet paper with white paint. The reason we do this is because if the napkin is too thin, the Brown Cardboard from the toilet paper roll will show right through the napkin. I always paint my toilet paper roll just as a precaution in case that would happen. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 2: Once the paint has dried, you’re going to want to paint the toilet paper roll with some Mod podge and apply the napkin leaving an overhang on each end. Now, before applying the napkin, the majority of them are two-ply, so you do have to rip that back layer of the napkin off. To do this, I just rip the corner of the napkin and then it usually separates pretty easily. Also, as you lay your napkin down, you want to make sure to smooth out any bumps or wrinkles.

Step 3: Now paint the inside of each end of the toilet paper. Roll with some Mod podge and gently tuck the napkin down inside. Smooth out any wrinkles. Allow the mod podge to dry well before moving on.

Step 4: Next, pinch the bottom of the toilet paper roll and fold it to the back of your project. Make sure you have the seam where the napkin meets in the back of your project also.  You can now either hot glue the fold or staple it. I actually did both in the video because I wasn’t sure how well the hot glue would hold up overtime.

Step 5: Take a magnet and glue it to the back of your project.

Step 6: Now we can make this cute magnet pretty. To do this, I added some Spanish Moss into the tube and also of lavender floral pick. I then took some raffia and made a cute little bow and glued it to the front.
