Let’s Build A Snowman! – DIY Craft Kit Tutorial

Hey there! I did a live crafting video on my Facebook page this week and it was so much fun! I used a few laser-cut elements from a couple of craft kits we offer and made a cute little snowman. If you missed it, you can watch the recording HERE or follow along with the steps below. Viewers loved this so much that we decided to make it into an actual kit that you can find HERE!

Alright, let’s get started!

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Snowman Craft Kit (It comes in a set of 3)
  • Acrylic paint: White, orange
  • Paint brushes
  • Sharpie Paint Effect Markers in Black and White (Or black and white acrylic paint)
  • Blush makeup (or a light pink to make rosy cheeks)
  • Sand paper or sanding block
  • Antique wax (and something to apply it like a baby wipe)
  • Fabric
  • Twine
  • Faux greenery and berries
  • Small jingle bells or buttons
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1: Prepare the Base of your Snowman Face

Start by painting the background of your snowman face with white acrylic paint. Depending on your paint brand, you might need an extra coat or two. Let it dry. I like to use my hair dryer to make the drying time go faster.

If you like that worn rustic or primitive look, once it’s dry, give your project a light sand around the edges. Then lightly rub some antique wax over it. I like to apply this with a baby wipe. Let it dry completely.

Step 3: Cut Fabric for the Hat and Scarf of your Snowman

Next, grab a piece of fabric that’s about 8×8 inches for a hat and a strip of fabric for a scarf. The length of the scarf will depend on how you want to tie it. I like to snip into a larger piece of fabric, then rip the fabric by hand to get a frayed edge.

Step 4: Add the Hat

Then take your square piece of fabric and fold up one edge about a 1/2 inch depending on how thick you want your snowman’s hat brim to be. Next, wrap the fabric around your rectangle base about an inch down or so from the top and overlap the fabric slightly on the back to create your snowman hat. Cut off any extra fabric that’s in the way on the backside and hot glue it in place.

Next, take some twine and wrap it around the loose fabric in the middle of your hat and cinch it tight. Tie a bow. Trim down your the twine any any fabric at the top that’s too long.

Step 5: Add the Scarf

For your snowman’s scarf, take your long strip of fabric and wrap it around your base about an inch up from the bottom. Tie it with a knot, a bow, or however you’d like to make it cute! We won’t tack it down with hot glue just yet just in case we want to move it a little after we draw the face.

Step 5: Paint Your Snowman’s Nose

Grab your snowman nose cutout and paint it with your orange acrylic paint. Let it dry, then lightly sand it and add a little antique wax to keep the rustic worn look.

Step 6: Paint Your Snowman’s Face

Place the nose on your project without gluing it down to get an idea of where you want it. Using your black Sharpie Paint Effects Marker, draw two little eyes above where you placed the nose. Use your white Sharpie Paint Effects Marker to draw little white highlight on each of the eyes.

Next, remove the nose and use the blush to rub on some rosy cheeks. Hot glue the nose in place.

Step 7: Final Embellishments

To finish off your cute snowman, you can add bells, buttons, faux greenery or other embellishments. For mine, I decided to use two rusty bells for the buttons in the middle of his body, then some faux greenery on his hat. I also had this super fun rusty star that I also added to the hat. Secure everything well with hot glue.

And that’s it! Let me know what you think and if you plan on giving this a try in the comments below. Happy crafting!
