The Lilian (World’s BEST Turkey Sandwich!)
The Lilian
(Note: This recipe is not my own. This recipe came from a small country market I used to work at called Mauers’ market. This market no longer exists but I wanted to keep the memories of it alive by sharing this recipe.)
Right after I graduated high school I got a job at a local country market. I had some of the best times of my life at that little store. I loved the people I worked with and the customer relationships I made. It was always fun to make those personal connections with our customers. To this day I still remember what some of the regulars would order. One customer used to call in and order a hoagie and say, “Put everything but the kitchen sink on it!.” Man, I miss those days!
I couldn’t make a career out of working at this market for many reasons, but I do keep these fun memories alive by making some of the specials from time to time. One of my favorite specials, which I didn’t realize how much I loved until recently, was the Lillian. The Lilian consisted of a thick slice of turkey, bacon, and all your favorite sandwich toppings smashed in between a grilled deli bun.
I’m sure by now you are wondering why this sandwich is called the Lillian. Well, because this sandwich was named after one of the employees named Lil. I absolutely adored Lil! She was just as sweet as she was spunky, kind of like this sandwich. She always had a smile on her face and was always so fun to work with. Did I mention that I miss those days?
