Rustic Dollar Tree Heart Shelf Sitter

Today, I am excited to show you how I made this rustic Dollar Tree heart shelf sitter. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with some heartfelt DIY decor? I recently had the pleasure of transforming a simple Dollar Tree heart into a charming rustic Valentine’s Day decoration. The best part? It was not only super cute but also incredibly affordable.

Crafting with supplies from Dollar Tree has always been a favorite of mine. Their selection of items is not only budget-friendly but also surprisingly adorable. With a little creativity and some basic crafting supplies, I was able to turn this plain heart into a beautiful rustic decor piece that is perfect for the season of love.

This rustic heart decoration would make an excellent addition to any Valentine’s Day display. Whether you choose to place it on a shelf or use it as a centerpiece, its charm is sure to captivate anyone who sees it. Additionally, it could also serve as an adorable handmade gift for your loved ones.

So, this Valentine’s Day, be sure to embrace your creative side and make one of these cute rustic heart decorations using a Dollar Tree heart. Not only will you have a unique and personalized piece of decor, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of knowing that you created something beautiful without breaking the bank. Here’s how:

Materials Needed:

Conversation Heart decoration from Dollar Tree
Black paint
Red Flamenco Paint
Antique wax
old hymns or book pages

Dixie Bell Antique wax
Mod Podge
Sanding block and sand paper – I LOVE this yellow one! CLICK HERE ( Affiliate Link)

Material or ribbon for bow
Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Step 1: Sand The Heart

Sand the edges off of one of the Dollar Tree conversation hearts using a sanding block, or sanding paper.

Step 2: Paint the Edges

Paint the edges around the heart black or any color you like. Allow to dry.

Step 3: Mod Podge Your Decorative Paper Sheets

Take some old hymnals or other decorative paper and carefully tear them up into different sized pieces. Next, use some Mod Podge and secure the ripped hymnal pieces over the top of the heart. I do this in no particular order. Allow this to dry.

Step 4: Cut off & Sand Excess Paper

Using a sanding block, sand away any hymnal paper that goes over the edges of the heart.

Step 5: Add Antique Wax

Rub some antique wax over the front of the hymnal covered heart. I use a wet wipe to apply the antique wax. Then, allow this to dry.

Next, I wanted to add a little more rustic character to my heart shape so I took some Rub and Buff in the color “Spanish Copper” and rubbed it around the sides and edges of the heart. I use my finger to apply this. This creates a deep rustic look to the project. Allow to dry.

Step 6: Paint The Smaller Wooden Heart

Next, I used a smaller wood heart cutout I got from Hobby Lobby. You can find similar hearts HERE. Paint the heart red and allow to dry. Then, once dry, go over this small red heart with a sanding block to make it look more rustic.

Step 8: Add Antique Wax to the Smaller Heart

Then, rub some antique wax onto this small red heart and allow it to dry.

Step 9: Assemble Your Hearts Together

Place some hot glue on the back of the small red heart and then carefully hot glue it onto the center of the larger hymnal covered heart. Press down to secure the red heart into place. Allow to dry.

Step 10: Prepare The “Home” Tag

Next, using one of our printable subscription prints ( You can join our digital printable subscription group HERE) that reads “HOME,” carefully tear around the edges of the printed word. Then, rub some antique wax over this print and allow it to dry. Next, to add a more rustic look, gently crinkle the print and then uncrinkle it. Then, apply some Dixie Bell antique wax around the edges of the “HOME” print, and allow this to dry.

Step 11: Make a Fabric Bow

Take some fabric of your liking and rip a strip of it. Next, tie it into a small bow. I got my fabric from Hobby Lobby

Step 12: Assemble & Add Finishing Touches

Use hot glue to secure the “HOME” print onto the heart. I placed mine so it hangs down vertically over the heart.

Next, add hot glue to secure the small fabric bow into the top center of the heart project. Allow to dry. Trim away any excess fabric from the ends of the bow. You can use some hot glue to secure the ends of the bow into place, if needed. Allow to dry. Enjoy this cute Valentine’s Day rustic heart shelf sitter!
