Rustic Spring Cutting Board Craft Tutorial
Looking for a fun and easy way to give a simple cutting board a charming, rustic makeover? This DIY project is perfect for adding a touch of farmhouse flair to your home! Using just a few materials, including a wooden bird cutout and some paint, you can create a beautiful rustic spring inspired cutting board in no time. Follow along for all the details!

Supplies You’ll Need:
- Wooden cutting board (I got mine from Hobby Lobby!)
- Wooden bird cutout from our Bird Cutouts Pack
- Wood stain (I used Waverly Antique Wax)
- Acrylic paint: Vintage White & English Navy
- Painter’s tape
- Sanding block
- Spanish moss
- Greenery (optional)
- Raffia
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
Step 1: Prep & Stain the Cutting Board and Bird Pieces
Start by staining both the cutting board and the wooden bird cutout with Waverly Antique Wax. This gives the wood a rich, warm tone and helps create a rustic feel.

Once the stain is dry, paint the bird with Vintage White. This soft, creamy color will contrast beautifully against the darker background. Let it dry completely before moving on.

Step 2: Paint the Cutting Board
Now, let’s add a pop of color! I painted my cutting board in English Navy, applying two coats for full coverage. Sometimes, bamboo cutting boards absorb paint differently, so don’t be afraid to go over it again if needed.

Step 3: Add Pinstripes
To give the cutting board some extra detail, I decided to try pinstripes! Using painter’s tape, I created a design with one thick stripe and two thinner ones. I then painted the stripes in bright white to contrast against the navy background. I think this is a super pretty combo. What do you think?

My stripes weren’t perfectly straight, but once everything was finished, you couldn’t even tell! If you love the look of crisp lines, take your time positioning the tape before painting.
Once the stripes are dry, lightly sand over the entire board to give it that distressed, farmhouse look.

Step 4: Distress the Bird
Next, to add some dimension to the bird, I lightly sanded over the Vintage White paint and then used an inking pad around the edges to create a subtle distressed effect.

Step 5: Assemble & Add Finishing Touches
Now, it’s time to assemble everything! Glue a small bundle of Spanish moss to one corner of the cutting board, then attach the wooden bird on top. Than add a little greenery for an extra pop of color.

No farmhouse craft is complete without a bow! I made a simple raffia bow and glued it near the base of the bird for a soft, rustic touch.

That’s it—your Rustic Bird Cutting Board is finished! This charming piece is perfect for spring decorating or even as a handmade gift.
