Snowman Shelf Sitter | DIY Upcycled Winter Decor

Hey friends, it’s Emily! I know some of you aren’t ready to think about Christmas yet… but I’m posting this one anyway because it’s just too cute not to share! I’m making an adorable snowman shelf sitter that’s perfect for winter decorating — and the best part is, it uses some simple, affordable supplies. (Video tutorial at the end of this post!)

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Wooden egg shape (mine was a leftover Easter find from Hobby Lobby)
  • Acrylic paint: White and orange
  • Sanding block
  • Dixie Belle Antique Wax & blending tool
  • Fabric for hat & scarf
  • Twine
  • Sharpie paint effect marker (black)
  • Small wooden carrot nose (from our Christmas Fun Box or Snowman Noses kits)
  • Blush (for cheeks)
  • Greenery (faux or dried)
  • Small bells
  • Wooden star (also from our Christmas Fun Box)
  • SnowTex
  • Glitter
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Step 1: Paint & Prep the Snowman Body

I started with a wooden egg shape I picked up at Hobby Lobby during Easter clearance. First, I painted it white — it took about two to three coats to completely cover the blue. Once it was dry (I like to use my hair dryer to speed up the drying time), I scuffed it up a little with a sanding block to give it that rustic, worn look.

Step 2: Add Antique Wax for Dimension

Next, I grabbed my Dixie Belle Antique Wax and used my blending tool to run it lightly over the surface. This adds some depth and a vintage feel. Let it dry before moving on.

Step 3: Make & Attach the Hat

For the hat, I used fabric from Jubilee Fabrics (they have such pretty selections!). I ripped the fabric to size so it had frayed edges, then glued it around the top of the snowman’s head.

I tied it off  at the top with twine to create a gathered hat, then snipped the very tip for a cute, floppy look.

Step 4: Add the Scarf

I tied a coordinating fabric scarf around the snowman’s neck (the lowest part of the egg shape without it falling off). If your fabric isn’t long enough, just glue two pieces together — that’s what I did, with the seam hidden in the back.

Step 5: Create the Face & Nose

Using my Sharpie paint effect marker, I drew on two eyes. The carrot nose came from our Christmas Fun Box. Next, I painted it orange, gave it a light sanding, and brushed it with antique wax.

To add some cute little blush cheeks, I rubbed some blush on it with my finger. Then, I hot glued the nose in place.

Next, for the smile, I added a simple dotted happy curve line with my marker, then went back with a white marker for a little highlight detail.

Step 6: Embellish with Details

I glued a bell to the scarf and some greenery at the base of the hat and also added a small bell to the top of the hat.

The star — also from the Christmas Fun Box — got a coat of white paint, some sanding, and antique wax before being glued over the greenery.

Step 8: Add Snow & Sparkle

Finally, I used SnowTex (applied with a palette knife) to give a snowy texture. It’s a little tricky to work with — kind of like trying to frost a warm cake! Just keep playing with it until you like the look.

Then, sprinkle on glitter while it’s still wet for the perfect snowy sparkle.

And that’s it! This snowman shelf sitter turned out so adorable. I can’t wait to display mine for Christmas and all winter long. Let me know if you plan to give this one a try!
