Thrift Store Snowman Makeover: Turning a Thrift Find into a Farmhouse Favorite

You guys are going to absolutely love this makeover! I found this wooden snowman at my local Goodwill, and with just a few simple steps (and some paint and creativity), it got a total farmhouse-style transformation. I used some super cute elements from our Christmas Fun Box to bring this snowman to life.

Step 1: Prep Your Thrifted Snowman Find

First things first, I unscrewed the base and tried to take the snowman apart — it didn’t budge at first (spoiler: it eventually fell off on its own later!).

Next, I removed the buttons, nose, and scarf. Using a small scraper tool, I cleaned up any leftover glue, price tags, or rough spots. Then I wiped everything down with a baby wipe.

To remove any sticky residue, I added a little Goo Gone and went over the whole piece again. Once dry, I used my palm sander to smooth both the front and back. Then I wiped the dust away off my snowman with a baby wipe.

Step 2: Painting the Base Colors

It’s time to paint!

I started with “Vintage White” acrylic paint from Hobby Lobby and a foam brush — although this particular brush wasn’t cooperating (the bristles were too long and floppy). I quickly switched to a regular paintbrush for smoother coverage.

Carefully paint along the edge where the hat meets the snowman’s head to keep that line crisp and clean. I painted both the front and back, but I only showed the front to save time.

Next, I switched to black paint for the hat, again keeping my lines as neat as possible and painting along the sides.

Step 3: Distress and Antique

Once the paint was completely dry (this is important!), I lightly went over it again with my palm sander to give it a soft, distressed look. If your paint isn’t fully dry, the sander can pull it up in clumps — so be patient here.

Then, I wiped off all the dust and used Waverly Antique Wax on a baby wipe to give it that beautiful aged look. I applied an even coat and then went back in with a circular motion to deepen the tone slightly.

Step 4: Adding the Details

From our Burlap Kitchen Christmas Fun Box, I grabbed one of the wooden carrot noses and painted it in Toasted Terracotta orange.

After it dried, I lightly sanded it and brushed over it with more antique wax for a rustic finish.

Next, I added some rosy cheeks with blush and used a Sharpie Paint Pen to draw simple black eyes. A few white dots in the centers made them pop!

Since the scarf would cover the lower part of his face, I skipped adding a mouth. I glued on the nose, and it was already looking adorable!

Step 5: Creating a Rustic Scarf

For the scarf, I used some cozy fabric from Hobby Lobby. To give it a vintage look, I brushed antique wax right over the fabric (you can also coffee-dye it for a similar effect).

Once dry, I wrapped it twice around the snowman’s neck for that “bundled up” look and tied it to the side.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

The little snowflakes from our Christmas Fun Box made perfect buttons! I stained them lightly and glued them in place.

Then, I tucked a bit of greenery and a rusty bell into the scarf for a pop of texture and color.

After sanding the base and reattaching it with the original screws, I added matching greenery and red pip berries along the bottom edge. I stapled them in place and hid the staples with a few pinecones, hot gluing them in place.

Step 7: Add Lights and Snow

To make it extra magical, I wrapped battery-operated fairy lights around the snowman’s body and glued the battery pack to the back.

For the final touch, I sprinkled on faux snow, focusing on the hat and base. It can be a little tricky to work with, but the result is worth it — it makes the whole project come to life!

The Finished Look ✨

And that’s it! My thrift store snowman makeover is complete — from a dated find to a festive farmhouse piece that lights up beautifully.
