Supplies List:
Thrift store metal tin container (or similar item)
White chalk paint
Sanding block
Medium-sized chicken cutout (from Burlap Kitchen found HERE)
Black paint (chalk or acrylic)
Bowdabra (optional, for making the bow)
Fabric strips
Excelsior (a.k.a. wood wool, optional, for adding texture to the bow)
Antique wax
Small tag (found at Hobby Lobby or craft stores)
Permanent marker
Stick Fast glue (or strong craft glue)
Floral foam
Greenery
Small flowers for a pop of color
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Step 1: Paint & Sand Your Thrifted Tin Container
The first thing to do is paint the tin container with chalk paint. When you’re painting something that has a shiny surface like this, you’ll want to use chalk paint because it adheres much better. I made sure it was good and dry before flipping it around and painting all the sides.

Once everything was painted and dried, I came in with a sanding block and scuffed it up really well to give it that rustic look. I mainly went over the ridges so some of the metal would shine through after sanding.

Step 2: Paint & Sand A Chicken Cutout
Next, I’m using one of these chicken cutouts that we sell in our shop. They come in a set of three different sizes: large, medium, and small. For this project, I’m using the medium-sized chicken. I painted it black, made sure it was completely dry, and then gave it a quick scuff with my sandpaper to match the rustic style.

Step 3: Make A Bow
I made a fabric bow using my Bowdabra. It helps to keep everything in place when making a bow with lots of layers and textures. Making a bow by hand works great too. I used a few different types of fabric along with some excelsior (also known as wood wool). I just layered it in between the fabric strips. The fabric I’m using is from Jubilee Fabric; they have so many beautiful options!

Step 4: Decorate The Outside of Your Tin Container
Once the bow was made, I tied it off and glued it to the top of the container.

Then I took some antique wax and stained a wooden button.
I also found a cute little tag, probably from Hobby Lobby last year—it came in a pack of about five. I stained the tag and used a marker to write “farm” on it. You could personalize yours with whatever word you like!

I glued the tag to the center of the bow and added the button right on top. After that, I used Stick Fast glue to attach the chicken cutout to the front of the container.

Step 5: Add Foam, Greenery, & Faux Flowers to the Inside of Your Container
To finish it up, I put some floral foam down inside the container. I picked up some pretty greenery at Hobby Lobby and tucked it in. I also wanted a little pop of color, so I found some flowers at Hobby Lobby, clipped a few off, and added them in among the greenery.

And that’s it! This project turned out so cute. I would love to see how you redo your thrifted farmhouse tin! Send me an email or connect with me on Facebook and Instagram!
