Wooden Spoon Snowman Shelf Sitter | DIY Winter Decor

Hey friends, it’s Emily from Burlap Kitchen! Today I’m going to show you how to take a simple wooden board and a Dollar Tree spoon and turn them into the cutest rustic snowman décor. This project is quick, inexpensive, and perfect for cozy winter decorating or gifting.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Wooden board (mine came from Walmart’s craft section)
  • Wooden spoon (Dollar Tree)
  • Popsicle stick
  • Acrylic Paint: FolkArt “Skyline Blue” (Hobby Lobby), Apple Barrel “Toasted Marshmallow” (Walmart), “Toasted Terracotta” (orange paint for the nose), and Black (for the face)
  • White Sharpie Paint Pen or white paint for highlights
  • Sanding block (extra fine grit, 220)
  • Small paintbrushes and chip brush
  • Scrap fabric
  • Greenery sprigs
  • Rusty bell
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Snowflake embellishments (from our Snowflake Pack HERE or our Christmas Embelishment Pack HERE)
  • White glitter
  • Spray Mod Podge

Step 1: Paint the Board

Start by painting your wooden board Skyline Blue. It’s such a pretty color — soft, wintry, and great for farmhouse projects!
Once you’ve covered the entire board, let it dry completely. I like to use my hair dryer to make the drying time go faster.

When dry, lightly sand the surface using extra-fine 220 grit sandpaper to give it that rustic finish.

Step 2: Paint the Spoon Hat

Next, paint the top half of your wooden spoon black — this will be the snowman’s hat. Also paint one popsicle stick black (this will become the hat’s brim). Let both pieces dry completely before moving on.

Once dry, lightly sand the edges of both pieces to give them a worn, farmhouse look.

Step 3: Paint the Snowman’s Face

Now paint the bottom half of the spoon white using Apple Barrel’s Toasted Marshmallow color.
You might need to adjust where the black meets the white so the hat looks balanced — don’t be afraid to bring that line down slightly.

After it’s dry, sand it gently again for texture and rustic charm.

Step 4: Add the Face

Lay the popsicle stick rim where you want it and sketch out your snowman’s face.

  • Use Toasted Terracotta paint for the carrot nose.
  • Use a Sharpie Paint Pen to draw the eyes and dotted mouth.
  • Add rosy cheeks using blush, rubbing it on in little circles or a dab some circles with pink paint.
  • Add small white dots inside the eyes and mouth for highlight details.

Step 6: Attach the Brim of the Hat to your Snowman

Hot glue the hat brim (the black painted popsicle stick) onto the spoon.

Step 6: Attach the Snowman Spoon to the Board

Once the spoon is completely dry, use hot glue to attach it to the center of your blue board.
Hold it firmly for a few seconds so it sets well.

Step 7: Add Snowflakes and Glitter

Paint your snowflake embellishments white and let them dry.
Then, to give them some sparkle, spray them with a coat of spray Mod Podge and sprinkle on some white glitter.

Once they’re dry, glue the snowflakes around your board in a scattered, snow-flurry pattern.
Then dip the back end of your paintbrush into white paint and add tiny dots around the background to look like falling snow.

Step 7: Embellish the Hat and Scarf on your Snowman Spoon

Add a bit of greenery to the hat and glue it down. Cut a small piece of scrap fabric to make a scarf — tie or glue it below the snowman’s face. Trim the ends and glue them into place so they stay how you like. Finish it off with a rusty bell in the center of the greenery for a classic rustic touch.

The Finished Look

And that’s it — your adorable Snowman Spoon Winter Decor is ready to display!
This project is perfect for hanging in your kitchen, on a shelf, entryway tables, or even as a handmade gift.
